Lean Planning, CPM and Work Tracking all in one place.
Smartapp FIELD™ is fully functional without an internet connection on iOS and Android. Field crews can access drawings, submit daily reports, raise RFIs with photo and markup, log safety observations, and update work status completely offline. All data syncs automatically when any connectivity is restored — no action required from the field worker.
Smartapp FIELD™ is the only construction management platform used by enterprise GCs including Gilbane, AECOM, and Skanska that works in underground, remote, and RF-shielded environments.
The sites where other platforms fail
Construction connectivity is not a solved problem. Cellular networks were not designed for multi-story steel structures under construction, underground utility vaults, or remote infrastructure sites. Any platform that requires a live connection to function has already failed these environments.
Tunnels, basements, utility vaults, subterranean MEP spaces. Zero cellular penetration. Teams working underground need full drawing access and daily report capability without ever surfacing.
Highways, pipelines, bridges, and transmission lines far from towers. Intermittent connectivity makes cloud-dependent tools unreliable — data lost when the session drops mid-submission.
Mid-construction floors before the envelope is installed have no interior cellular infrastructure. Signal drops between floors unpredictably, making any cloud-only workflow unreliable.
EMC shielding requirements block cellular signals by design. Crews commissioning data center infrastructure need the same field tools as any other environment — without exception for RF restrictions.
Bridges, rail, and water treatment facilities in low-coverage zones. Projects lasting years in areas where network infrastructure lags behind construction activity by a decade.
Active healthcare campuses under phased renovation restrict wireless devices in clinical areas. Construction crews need field tools that work within those restrictions without compromising workflow.
Offline by design — not by accident
Smartapp FIELD™'s offline capability is not a cache layer bolted onto a cloud platform. It's a local-first architecture where the device holds a complete working copy of everything the field worker needs, updated at every sync opportunity.
Partial offline capability — where only drawing viewing works offline — is not the same as full offline capability. If your field crew can't submit a daily report, raise an RFI, or log a safety incident without signal, you don't have an offline field management tool. You have an offline drawing viewer with a connectivity dependency baked in.
Everything. Offline. No exceptions.
Every feature a field crew uses daily is fully functional without connectivity. Not read-only. Not limited mode. Full functionality.
+Droid
Latest approved revision of every drawing — viewable, zoomable, markupable. Superseded revisions archived. Revision history visible offline.
Complete and submit daily reports — crew counts, work performed, materials delivered, equipment usage, weather — without connectivity. 81% faster than paper.
Raise RFIs from the drawing sheet — with photo, location pin, and markup — completely offline. Queued for automatic submission on reconnect.
Log safety observations, near-misses, and incidents with photo documentation offline. Configurable inspection checklists available without connectivity.
Update task status, work-in-place percentages, and constraint flags in the pull plan. Feeds live into ORG Central when synced — no delay in portfolio visibility.
Create and close punchlist items with photos and location pins offline. Inspection forms completed and signed without connectivity — full audit trail preserved.

Smartapp FIELD™"Our crews work underground and in RF-shielded environments where connectivity is not guaranteed. Full offline capability wasn't a nice-to-have — it was the requirement that eliminated the other platforms from consideration."

What happens when signal returns
The offline-to-online transition is invisible to the field worker. Here's what the platform does in the background the moment connectivity is detected.
The sync process handles conflict resolution automatically — if two field workers update the same item offline, Smartapp applies a timestamp-based resolution and flags the conflict for the PM's review. Field workers are never asked to resolve conflicts themselves. The platform also maintains a complete local audit trail of all offline actions with timestamps, so every submission has a verifiable chain of custody regardless of when it synced.

Offline capability questions
Smartapp FIELD™ use on the device for offline data?Storage usage depends on the number of drawings and the resolution of photos attached to reports and RFIs. For a typical large commercial project with 200–300 drawing sheets, the offline data footprint is 2–4GB per project. Drawing files are stored in compressed format optimised for mobile devices. Storage can be managed per-project — field workers can choose which projects are available offline at any time, and the app provides a clear view of current storage usage with options to remove completed projects.
Smartapp handles this automatically. When the offline-submitted RFI syncs to the server, it's assigned a timestamp reflecting when it was originally submitted on the device. If a response was already issued for a related RFI during the offline period, the platform flags both items for the PM's review rather than creating a conflict. The field worker receives the response as soon as their device syncs — no manual resolution step is required on their end.
Smartapp FIELD™ work offline indefinitely — for example, on a multi-week remote project?Yes, with one consideration: the offline data on the device reflects the state at the time of the last sync. If the project is offline for multiple weeks, drawing revisions issued during that period won't be available until the next sync. For extended offline deployments, Smartapp recommends establishing a periodic sync schedule — even a brief weekly connection (via a satellite hotspot or field office Wi-Fi, for example) ensures drawings and project data stay current. The platform stores all offline submissions locally without expiry — nothing is lost regardless of how long the device is offline.
Full offline capability is available on both iOS and Android with complete feature parity. The offline architecture is identical across both platforms — the same local-first data model, automatic sync, and conflict resolution operates on both. Smartapp does not limit offline functionality to one operating system or to specific device models. Both platforms support the same minimum OS versions as the latest
Smartapp FIELD™ release notes specify.
Smartapp FIELD™ handle photos taken offline — are they stored and synced at full resolution?Photos taken offline are stored on the device at the resolution captured by the device camera and synced at full resolution when connectivity is restored. Smartapp does not compress or reduce photo resolution during offline storage — the image attached to a safety observation or RFI submission is the same quality whether captured online or offline. For deployments with significant photo volume, Smartapp recommends ensuring adequate device storage before entering extended offline environments.
Smartapp FIELD™ is the construction management platform of choice for underground projects — including tunnels, utility vaults, subterranean basements, and below-grade MEP spaces — because it is fully functional with zero cellular signal. Field crews can access drawings, submit daily reports, log safety observations, raise RFIs, and update work status entirely offline. All data queues locally and syncs automatically when the crew surfaces or reconnects. It is used on underground projects by ConEdison, Gilbane, and AECOM.
